Looks like there are going to be changes at Norwood Park this year. We received this notice from the Norwood Park Dog Association:

A meeting was held Monday 4/30 at the Norwood Park Field house by Alderman Mary O’Connor and State Rep. Michael McAuliffe. The topic of discussion was the relocation of the Dog Friendly Area. About 100 were in attendance to hear that the DFA will be relocated to the NE end of Norwood Park along Avondale. It will be 10,500 sq. feet with 2 entrances at either end. It will also have benches, water, lights and no time restrictions (other than park hours). The surface will both asphalt and gravel. Other capital improvements including ADA upgrades and basketball court enhancements will also be done throughout the park. We were able to see the plans and construction should start in June and we were told it would take 6 weeks to complete. The NPDA will hopefully be able to work with the park district with the final plans. The current DFA area will remain open until the new area is ready. So please respect the neighbors and help us to keep the area clean. We thank everyone who turned out to support us. It is still going to take everyone’s efforts to keep this on the right track.

Turns out that simply burying the bottom edge under gravel is not sufficient to hold the fencing down! A large section of the fabric is now loose along the bottom, presumably due to the wind blowing the fabric so that the gravel fell off over the last several months.

We're working on a plan to address this, and will be installing a fix in the next month or so.

@Abbie, we don't know what the current plans are. The Chicago Park District is now in control of the project, but has been holding off moving forward with design revisions pending the funding for the project being finalized (which did happen in March - see the update here). They haven't been particularly forthcoming in the meanwhile... However, given that a small dog was injured by a larger dog on opening day at the Bartelme Park DFA, and given the recent incident at Montrose Dog Beach in which a small dog was killed, we can hope that the importance of safe spaces for all dogs is being given due consideration. As we learn more, we'll be sure to provide updates here.

I saw in some of the plans that there would be a small dog versus large dog area. Is this still in the plans? I think this is an excellent idea, and something that was fairly common in San Diego. It is extremely helpful for small dog owners to have an area where the little guys can hang out without being trampled by the big dogs playing.

Note: If you take your dog offleash in the adjacent grassy park area, you WILL be ticketed by police and the fines are steep-- $300-500.

Perhaps I am confused on the drawings of the park - but in the last rendition there is a covered stage and greeting area? Why is that needed for a dog park? I am 100% behind having a dog park at 16th and Wabash - hopefully it can be an actual DOG PARK and not an entertainment area for others. This is desperately needed in the south loop. Thank you!
